Could Myrrh really be golden for gum health? Once cherished higher than gold, Myrrh is a tree resin that comes from the Commiphora tree species. It has been talked about for centuries and used in many civilizations and cultures! So what does it do for your gums?
Let’s find out….
Myrrh is considered to be an antibacterial and anti septic, it is so antiseptic that it was used for embalming and mummifying Egyptian Pharaohs! Ancient Greek soldiers would carry it into battle to treat wounds and prevent gangrene. As an astringent and healing agent it was considered more valuable than gold during the storied time when the Magi brought it after the birth of Jesus.
Could it be the antibacterial and anti septic properties that made it more valuable than gold? We have to wonder!

According to NCBI The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) which is part of the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM), a branch of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). An article in the NCBI stated: Previous studies have indicated that myrrh acts as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and a circulatory and immune system stimulant.3–5,11,12 It has also been shown to stimulate plasma cell production and induce angiogenesis and, therefore, remodeling within 7 days of an injury occurring.27,28 Accordingly, myrrh may be potentially useful in the induction of wound healing and repair.(3)
So far Myrhh seems to be a powerful wound tonic as well as an aid in quick recovery or cell regeneration based on the stimulation of plasma cell production effects Myrhh has been kshown to generate. I think we could be onto something..
Scientists at the University of Florence, intrigued by myrrh, looked into its ancient uses and found the Egyptians used it as an embalming fluid; the ancient Jews used myrrh as both anointing oil and painkiller. Hippocrates praised myrrh as a balm for sores; the Romans used it to treat mouth and eye infections, coughs and worm infestations. (4)
Now we are starting to see why Myrrh was cherished more than Gold! Tho, gold may be a shiny metal conduit that could posses magical powers, Myrrhs antimicrobal, antifungal, antiseptic, and anti inflammatory power may overrule as health is highly cherished! This makes sense seeing as how You do only have one life, or at least one life in this body…
According to webmd a reputable web source for health information and studies, Myrrh is applied directly to the mouth for soreness and swelling, inflamed gums (gingivitis), loose teeth, canker sores, bad breath, and chapped lips. It is also used topically for hemorrhoids, bedsores, wounds, abrasions, and boils.(5)

A lab-based study found that myrrh also has potential anticancer benefits. The researchers found that myrrh was able to reduce the proliferation or replication of human cancer cells. They found that myrrh inhibited growth in eight different types of cancer cells, specifically gynecological cancers. Although further research is needed to determine exactly how to use myrrh for cancer treatment, this initial research is promising. (2)

So with all this being said I was unable to find any actual studies showing that Myrhh could heal the gums, not because this has been passed down threw tradition and generations but because their simply hasn’t been much research on it! In this case I think it’s best to take the history of Myrrh and it’s ancients uses into consideration when deciding if myrrh is right for you!
We advocate ancient tradition as well as holistic healing arts and will continue to use Myrhh as a main ingredient in our tooth powder as this is how our ancestors used it!
